The head of Syria’s “White Helmets” civilian defence group, Raed al-Saleh, has been visiting European capitals ahead of a visit to Washington to push for a flight embargo as violence escalates in Syria.
“Russia’s decision to pursue a military campaign proves that the political solution they were talking about was not realistic,” Saleh said.

UN investigators said on Monday that Russia has committed war crimes in Syria by carrying out indiscriminate airstrikes on civilian targets in 2019. The commission also observed a “crime of intentionally terrorizing the population” in order to force civilians to move, tactics that are still emerging very clearly, for example, in Idlib.
The investigators also said that Syrian rebels allied with Turkey and Al Qaeda-linked rebels had inflicted scores of civilian casualties in rocket attacks on government-held areas.

Turkey’s effective exercise of military power in Idlib has exposed former US President Barack Obama’s timidity in not enforcing his famed “red line”, and made a mockery of Obama’s assertions and deflections.
Syria ranks as one of the UN’s most humiliating and consequential failures to halt and prevent genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing, and crimes against humanity.

The Turkish defence ministry confirmed that “an L-39 plane belonging to the Syrian regime has been downed”. It was the third such shoot-down in three days after Turkey hit two other Syrian aircraft on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Syrian government forces overnight took over the key city of Saraqeb.

13 people were killed yesterday, including 7 children, and 21 others were injured, by the Russian and regime aerial and artillery shelling, which targeted 21 cities in #Idlib and #Aleppo, with 59 airstrikes, 110 artillery shells and 29 missile launchers. Yet one more massacre.

Helsinki Commission Chairman Representative Alcee L. Hastings issued a statement where he condemned the unacceptable military escalation, civilian suffering, and displacement crisis witnessed in Idlib. He urged Putin and Assad to stop this assault immediately and comply with international humanitarian law requiring them to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure.
Since early December, fighting in northwestern Syria has displaced more than 948,000 people, including 569,000 children and 195,000 women, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. Turkey hosts more than 3.5 million Syrian refugees.
Reporters Without Borders condemns the use of sexist insults and rumours by Syrian government supporters, including journalists, against Merna Alhasan, a freelance journalist who is one of the first women in the region to acquire a significant media profile as a result of her coverage of the situation in the Idlib region.
“Delighting in a journalist’s supposed rape and constantly using her gender to attack her work is intolerable,” said Sabrina Bennoui, the head of RSF’s Middle East desk. “The polarization of the media in Syria is resulting in spiteful and degrading smears and, in this case, attacks on a woman’s morality.”

The European Council on Refugees and Exiles is highly concerned about the political developments emanating from last week’s events in Idlib, Syria and urges calm and measured response, focused on accepting refugees and sharing responsibility across Europe.
Europe has the means for collective emergency responses that remain humane: there is no excuse for panic and panic is no excuse for repression at borders.

Turkey Is Forcing the West to Look at Idlib. It has demonstrated how easy it would have been to ground Assad’s air force—something that would have saved hundreds of thousands of lives and prevented Syria’s mass exodus had it happened earlier. This week, Ankara announced it would no longer stop refugees from crossing into Europe.
European leaders have responded with sympathy for the EU countries bordering Turkey. The refugees are a symptom of the mass crimes the West has tolerated, particularly in Syria, but it views them as a threat.
“Without question, the international community must wake up to the reality in Syria. We cannot turn a blind eye to the images we see of destruction and death from barrel bomb attacks in Idlib, and we cannot turn off the videos of children gasping for their last breath after a chemical weapon was dropped on their playground in Eastern Ghouta. We cannot continue to look the other way as Assad and his backers continue their genocide in Syria.”

EU leaders have praised Greece as the “shield” of Europe against refugees, despite emerging evidence of inhumane and violent treatment of migrants by Greek security forces at the country’s border.
Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission president, apparently unconcerned by the humanitarian violations, said: “I thank the Greek border guards and coast guards, the police, servicemen and servicewomen and Frontex for their tireless effort.”
Russian warplanes bombed a chicken farm used as a temporary accommodation center for IDPs in Maaret Masrin city, killing 14 civilians, including five women and two children and injuring 20 others, including five women and five children.

“Laying the blame on the Turkish president is simply too easy.”
The EU can’t keep sticking its head in the sand. Thousands of migrants are gathered on the border between Turkey and Greece with no intention of turning around. Meanwhile, a real inferno is unfolding in Idlib, and some 950,000 refugees trapped in Syria at the Turkish border are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.

“A new low has been found in the means, political and rhetorical, of handling the Syrian refugee tragedy by Turkey and the European Union.”
“We stare at the images from the Greek-Turkish border, and have to remind ourselves that these people sleeping in the open air are supposed to be “survivors” of the bottomless Syrian tragedy. Yet the tragedy persists over there, in the Syrian interior (or interiors), along the Syrian-Turkish border zone, particularly in Idlib.“

On why the US should act in Syria.
“After our troubles in Iraq and Afghanistan, many Americans just want the United States out of the Middle East. But Syria is not Iraq. With just a few hundred soldiers and some help to our allies, the lives of millions can be spared from Assad’s cruel rule. And if we allow this slaughter, there will be more slaughters to come. We have a moral imperative to try to stop that.”
March 7, 2020
A delegation from the Syrian Opposition Coalition toured the Turkish-Greek border to check on the Syrian refugees and stressed that there is an urgent need for the intervention of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and other international organizations to provide protection for refugees.
Refugees caught between Turkey and Greece have nowhere to turn. Some people have been stripped of their belongings by Greek police and sent back over the border, many of them just in their underwear.
“This is like a chain reaction. What’s happening in Idlib is affecting Turkey. And now it’s starting to affect Europe as well.”

“In a conflict that is unpredictable and always changing, there are only two rules: no matter how unbelievably bad everything is, if you wait a few months it will get worse—and the world will ignore it.”

Fares Shehabi, a member of the Assad regime Syrian parliament is accused of a sexist smear campaign against the Syrian journalist Merna Alhasan.
Merna, an Idlib native, is also stuck among the 3 million refugees – many of whom were displaced from other cities – besieged in the final rebel-held province, making her passionate and authentic. She is unique because she is the only female journalist native of Idlib to appear in front of the camera, presenting her own news reports.

More than 950,000 Syrians have been forced from their homes since December, the vast majority of them – at least 81 percent – being women and children.
Since December, more than 200 refugee camps have been set up in Idlib, but the camps lack basic sanitation and are far over their capacity, forcing tens of thousands to sleep outside in sub-zero temperatures, resulting in a number of children freezing to death.
